There’s something about September, isn’t there?
Even as an adult, it can still feel like a fresh start. The summer holidays are winding down, routines are creeping back in, the evenings are drawing in, and suddenly we find ourselves thinking:
“Right, I need to get back on track.”
But before you decide you need a strict diet, a punishing exercise plan and a full lifestyle overhaul, let me stop you right there.
You don’t need to start all over again.
September isn’t about punishing yourself for enjoying the summer. It’s about gently easing back into a routine that makes you feel good – inside and out.
So what does a proper September reset actually look like?
1. Get back into a routine
Summer often means later nights, holidays, meals out, barbecues, days out and a more relaxed approach to exercise. And that’s absolutely fine.
Rather than feeling guilty about it, simply start bringing some structure back into your week:
- Book in your exercise sessions
- Plan when you’re going to walk
- Get back to preparing meals at home
- Start going to bed at a more consistent time
2. Don’t try to “undo” the summer
This is the one I really want you to hear: you do not need to earn your food or exercise off what you’ve eaten.
You enjoyed your holidays. You had meals out. A few extra glasses of wine. Ice cream on the beach. That’s life.
The answer isn’t drastically cutting calories or throwing yourself into hours of cardio. Instead, focus on getting back to balanced, nourishing meals – plenty of protein, fruit, vegetables, hydration and regular movement.
Your body doesn’t need punishment. It needs support.
3. Make strength training a priority
Strength training matters at every age and stage – and it becomes especially important as our bodies change over time.
Building and maintaining muscle helps you stay strong, capable and independent. It supports your everyday movements, protects your bones, and gives you the strength to keep doing the things you love.
And no, you don’t need to spend hours in a gym lifting enormous weights. Regular, progressive resistance training – whether that’s dumbbells, bodyweight or resistance bands – is one of the best investments you can make in yourself.
4. Set goals that aren’t just about weight
September is a great time to think about what you actually want from the next few months. Maybe it’s:
- Feeling stronger
- Having more energy
- Improving your fitness
- Lifting heavier weights
- Improving your balance and mobility
- Getting back into your favourite clothes
- Feeling more confident
- Keeping up with the kids (or grandkids!)
- Simply feeling better in yourself
Your goal doesn’t have to be a number on the scales. In fact, some of the most important changes you’ll make won’t show up there at all.
5. Don’t wait until January
This is probably my biggest piece of advice: you don’t need to wait for January. You don’t need a Monday. You don’t need a new year. And you certainly don’t need to be “perfect” before you begin.
September is a brilliant time to start making small changes you can actually maintain. Imagine how different you could feel by January if you’d already spent four months consistently looking after yourself.
Instead of January being your starting point, it simply becomes the next chapter.
Make this autumn about getting stronger
As we head into autumn, why not make this season less about restriction and more about strength? Less about how you think you should look and more about how you want to feel. Less about starting again and more about building on what you’ve already achieved.
Because fitness isn’t something you have to be perfect at. It’s something you can keep coming back to.
If you’ve fallen out of your routine over the summer, that’s okay. Just start again.
One workout. One walk. One nourishing meal. One small decision at a time.
